The Glass Menagerie

The 47th Street Theatre
304 W. 47th Street New York

Containing some of the meatiest roles ever written for the American stage, Tennessee Williams' emotional masterpiece The Glass Menagerie is set in a St. Louis tenement, where aspiring poet Tom Wingfield struggles with a mind-numbing job and a smothering home life. His overbearing mother, a former Southern belle, constantly pushes her son to bring home "gentleman callers" for his painfully shy sister Laura, whose collection of glass animals means everything to her. But when Tom finally does produces a male visitor, the guest's presence sends shock waves through the family -- and the fragile fantasy world they've built may be irreparably shattered. Among the actors who've starred in the play's various film and Broadway productions are Jessica Lange, Jessica Tandy, Katherine Hepburn, John Malkovich, Kirk Douglas, Rip Torn, Christian Slater and Calista Flockhart. Based on the playwright's own background, The Glass Menagerie takes the stage at The 47th Street Theatre as the inaugural production of the new Masterworks Theater Company.
