Snow in Midsummer is a play set in a rural town which has been ravaged by drought, as a businesswoman quickly learns when she moves to take over a factory there. But it's no ordinary drought - it's the result of a curse placed on the town by a woman years prior, after she was convicted of a crime she didn't commit and executed anyway. Snow in Midsummer is adapted from The Injustice to Dou Yi That Moved Heaven and Earth, a classical Chinese drama by Guan Hanqing, and Cowhig's version ties the drought of the original story to the sweeping ecological disasters of climate change today. Through this ghost story, Cowhig illustrates how past mistakes can destroy future generations, and also what restorative justice looks like.
