Axis Theatre Company's home (also known as One Sheridan Space) seats over 100 people and boasts air conditioning and state-of-the-art lighting and sound. Since 1834, there has been a theater located at One Sheridan Square in Greenwich Village. Built by Samuel Whitmore, it wasn't until the 1930's that this basement venue became a destination of choice in the Village. Called "Goofy Clubs," it was first a theme restaurant where diners ate in a dungeon. Then, in 1938, Barney Josephson borrowed $6000 to open a supper club called Cafe Society. A cultural phenomenon until 1950, Cafe Society saw performances by jazz legends like Billie Holiday, Lena Horne and Sara Vaughn. In the 1950s and '60s, the club became a restaurant, a theater, and a gay nightclub before once again becoming a theater. Axis Company acquired the space in 1998, and transformed the interior to reflect Artistic Director Randy Sharp's vision of total theatrical immersion, where audiences are surrounded by the experience of the play the moment they cross the threshold.
