Rhinoceros

The Gene Frankel Theatre
24 Bond Street New York

Ionesco was the master of the Theater of the Absurd, a dramatic genre where the world is incomprehensible and anything can happen. This Onomatopoeia Theatre Company production of Rhinoceros, coming to the Gene Frankel Theatre in New York City, is set in a small village where the inhabitants are transforming, one by one, into rhinoceroses. Only Bérenger, the central character, seems immune to the metamorphosis. Written during the aftermath of World War II, the play served as a harsh criticism of the circumstances that led to widespread acceptance of fascism and Nazism. To this day, it remains a pointed critique of conformity and mass culture.
