The New York Times - Somewhat Recommended

"...Leave aside its seriousness, its intimacy, its wit. Leave aside, too, its relative obscurity, despite being frequently performed. (Without really trying, I?ve seen it six times, including the 2014 film.) Even apart from any of that, ?The Last Five Years,? by Jason Robert Brown, is still the ur-nerdical ? nerdical being a term I made up to describe shows, like ?Fun Home,? ?The Band?s Visit? and ?Kimberly Akimbo,? that are too good to stay in the very small theater-geek niche they arose from. Turns out they can speak, and sing, to anyone."

"...Now, add in woefully miscast leads in Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren and barely-there direction by Whitney White and what you get is the dirge that opened Sunday night at the Hudson Theatre ? one of the worst musical productions of the season. It?s appallingly bad."

"...Both of these performers are whopping musical talents and their mutual vocal prowess is very much on display ? to the obvious delight of the many Jonas fans in the house. But you simply cannot believe that Warren is a hard-working but everyday young actress stuck in Ohio, doing shows no one of importance comes to see, any more than you can believe Jonas is a writer who is new to the temptations of fame, and also young enough to be excited by a New Yorker review of his book, rather than the reality, which is that he is an accomplished and experienced star."
