Mean Girls

Mean Girls

August Wilson Theatre
245 W 52nd St New York

Unlike some screen-to-stage adaptations, Mean Girls has embraced the opportunity to become its own theatrical entity. Rather than safely transposing the screenplay onto a stage and shoe-horning in a few songs wherever possible, the creative team has put together a show that goes above and beyond its hugely popular source material. Tina Fey has updated the book with sprinklings of post-2004, topical references that draw the biggest laughs of the night, whilst director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw has ensured that every opportunistic moment is brimming with movement and dance. Whether its striking tableaus of the three "Plastics," Damian's welcomed tap number or even a full, lunch tray-brandishing musical number, Nicholaw has the cast on its toes throughout. In addition, Finn Ross & Adam Young's scrapbook-esque video projections coupled with Scott Pask's sleek scenic design enable quick and seamless scene changes and delve the audience into the treacherous world of a teenage girl's mind.
