The Public Theater facility on Lafayette Street is the headquarters for the theater company of the same name. Located in the former Astor Library, the theater opened in 1967 with the world premiere of the musical Hair. The Public Theater has a total of six theater spaces that are used for all its productions, readings, workshops, rehearsals, events, concerts, and meetings.
