Near Vicksburg

The Wild Project
195 E. 3rd St. New York City

One of the most intense conflicts of the Civil War didn't happen on the ground, but under it. The riveting new drama Near Vicksburg is set during the Siege of Vicksburg, the harrowing 47 days of Union artillery fire and mortar attacks suffered by the Confederate-held city. To escape the relentless fire, the citizens of Vicksburg have fled to caves dug into the city's bluffs. In one of these caves hides Jane, a middle-class Southerner, George, her husband's slave, and her teenage daughter. As the war rages only inches away, Jane and George recreate their own version of society in the claustrophobic confines of their new home, a tiny world with its own set of rules and customs. Playwright Sara Farrington directs this production as a part of Phoenix Theatre Ensemble's First Stories Festival.
