Lucia di Lammermoor

Lucia di Lammermoor

Metropolitan Opera House
10 Lincoln Center Plaza New York

Love, betrayal and revenge have never been portrayed with more ravishing beauty than in Lucia di Lammermoor. Though the title character is indeed driven to insanity, it's the audience who goes nuts for Donizetti's tragic opera. The Met welcomes acclaimed Russian coloratura soprano Albina Shagimuratov, who's sung this role at La Scala and other great opera houses, as the unhinged Lucia. She'll star opposite Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja as he returns to the Met in the role of the tragic Edgardo in this bel canto opera. It's impossible not to be drawn into the tale of fragile Lucia, manipulated into marrying a man she doesn't love as she's used by her brother for his own political advancement. The scene when she finally "snaps" remains one of the most sublime -- and technically difficult -- in the entire operatic canon. Maurizio Benini conducts, while Tony winner Mary Zimmerman directs this production of Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera House.
