"...Ms. Feiffer's play, an Atlantic Theater Company production, is ostensibly a two-hander, but for much of its running time of about 90 minutes, only one hand does much of the work. As David recounts his hard life and triumph over heroic odds, and his ideas about how to make a life as an artist in the theater ("Be anything but safe"), Ella mostly sits in worshipful silence, lapping up his self-regarding monologue as if it were the wisdom of a great prophet."

"...There are a few quibbles, including whether Ella, a woman who wouldn't fight for a role, would really go to the extremes she does. And the 15-minute coda, set five years after the first scene, shifts the show into Neely O'Hara and "Valley of the Dolls" territory. Even so, "I'm Gonna Pray for You So Hard" hits hard enough to inspire a few OMGs."

Birney excels at playing mild-mannered guys, as in "Circle Mirror Transformation," but his meek, banal exterior makes him even better in villainous roles - his juicy turn as a scheming transvestite in last year's "Casa Valentina" earned him a Tony nomination."
