The grandest of grand operas, Giuseppe Verdi's Aida strikes a brilliant balance of spectacular pageantry and emotional intimacy, all of which you'll enjoy with an included glass of sparkling wine. Composed at the request of the King of Egypt for the opening of the Suez Canal in 1871, the opera tells the tragic tale of a love triangle in which an enslaved Ethiopian princess' love for the military leader Radames is doomed by his selection as the future groom of the Pharaoh's daughter. Marco Armiliato and Daniele Rustioni conduct, while three commanding sopranos -- Liudmyla Monastyrska, Latonia Moore, and Krassimira Stoyanova -- share the title role in these performances, sung in Italian with Met titles in English, German, Italian and Spanish.
