She radiates unbridled joy in the early scenes, when Vera trails happily after Belyaev and Koyla, beaming with understandable pleasure at finding a possible mate of her own age. Later, when Vera's hopes have dimmed, Ms. West registers her disillusionment and her resignation to a less charmed future with a gentle dignity, and a measure of the understatement that's too often absent from this disappointing production."
